Founded in London, England, by H.J. Lawson in 1896, the Daimler Company bought the licensing rights to use Gottleib Daimler's engines. After a shaky start, the company was sold to Birmingham Small Arms in 1910 where it found firm footing. Of course, it didn't hurt that Daimler was awarded the Royal Warrant to build cars for the British Monarchy in 1902, a position they held until they were replaced by Rolls-Royce in the 1950s. Throughout the century Daimler built some fantastic cars from economical transportation to opulent luxury cars. In 1959, Daimler shocked the world with a nifty little sports car to compete with the likes of Triumph, MG, and Austin-Healey. The result was the SP250, a stylish little roadster that made its mark through a lightweight fiberglass body and stellar performance. The SP250 was actually introduced as the Daimler "Dart" at the 1959 New York Auto Show, but threats from the Chrysler Corporation over using the Dart name led to it being referred to as the SP250. With its fiberglass body and 2.5-litre Hemi V-8, the SP250 was as good as any British roadster could be, but Jaguar acquired Daimler in 1960 and it was obvious that the E-Type did not need a competitor, so the SP250 died a quiet death in 1964.

A highly attractive SP250, as it is finished in a sleek Silver Blue Metallic over a like-new tan interior, this example has resided in the Passport Collection for the last five years. During the restoration on this SP250, a new Everflex convertible top that matches the interior was equipped and new whitewall tires were wrapped around the chrome 48-spoke knock-off wheels. The engine bay is nice and tidy and features a truly fun 2.5-litre Hemi V-8 engine mated to a four-speed manual gearbox. A lovely combination, it makes for memorable spirited driving, especially while the top is down. MGs, Triumphs, and Jaguars are all great choices and are a more common sight at events; however, this sporty British Daimler SP250 is rare, and will surely turn some heads at your next automobile gathering.
