1973 BMW 2002tii Coupe
In response to growing demands for more power-particularly from U.S. importer Max Hoffman-BMW introduced the 2002 model in 1968. Helmut Werner Bönsch, BMW\'s director of product planning, and Alex von Falkenhausen, the designer of the M10 engine, had already fitted their personal 1602s with 2.0-litre engines and suggested that BMW develop a production model with a similar setup. This led to the creation of the 2002tii. Standing for Touring International and Injection, the tii featured a 1,991cc engine with mechanical fuel injection, delivering 130bhp at 5,800rpm-an improvement over the 120bhp twin-Weber setup in the 2002TI. The 2002 range included a two-door saloon, a three-door Touring estate, and a Cabriolet, and sold very well in its day.
Owned by a dedicated BMW enthusiast for 25 years, it was then acquired by a collector in 2019 who then sold it to the Passport Collection in 2022. Under the care of its long-term owner, this 2002tii was the recipient of a multi-year documented restoration. Reported to have already been in solid condition before, it was taken all the way down to bare metal and was completely gone through. Painted in Fjord Blue, new trim, bumpers, rubber, and plating was added to the exterior. Receiving the same treatment, the interior received new grey carpeting, black vinyl seats, side panels, and dash panels were fitted. Mechanically, the desirable original numbers-matching four-cylinder fuel-injected engine was professionally rebuilt. To further enhance its driving enjoyment, a Getrag five-speed manual gearbox was sourced from a BMW E21 3 Series and installed. \n\nWithin the last five years during previous ownership, this BMW was upgraded with several other items such as a new suspension with modernized components, a new headliner, a modern Kenwood stereo system and speakers, Panasport wheels, and a MOMO steering wheel.
Accompanying the sale is a large binder containing parts invoices, service receipts, restoration information/photos and documents dating back to 1992. Tastefully upgraded and thoughtfully restored, this 1973 BMW 2002tii with its cult-like following is a wonderful addition to one\'s garage, roadgoing rallies, or Saturday morning cars and coffee events.
