After an extraordinary production run that lasted from 1963 to 1997, Porsche's iconic air-cooled 911 was dramatically reinvented for the 1998 model year as the Type 996. While its pedigree and rear-engine design were unmistakably Porsche, this generation heralded a major revolution. Changes included a completely redesigned body, a newly laid-out interior, and most notably, the engine was now water-cooled - a critical change necessary to keep contemporary high-performance engines at peak operating temperatures.
