The Speedster, introduced in 1954, was a stripped-down, lightweight version of the 356 aimed at enthusiasts and racers. However, its spartan nature - low-cut windshield, minimal interior, and side curtains instead of roll-up windows - limited its appeal as a road car. By 1958, Porsche sought to create a more livable alternative while maintaining the Speedster's sporty aesthetics. Thus, the 356 Convertible D was born.

Produced for just the 1959 model year, the Convertible D retained the Speedster's lower profile but incorporated several key refinements. To build this new version, Karosseriewerke Drauz was tasked. A German coachbuilder founded in 1900 in Heilbronn, they initially specialized in crafting horse-drawn carriages before transitioning to automobile bodies.
