The 1966 Ford Mustang played a key role in helping solidify its reputation as America's favorite pony car. Introduced as part of the first generation, the 1966 model retained the sleek, sporty styling of its predecessors while refining key features. With options ranging from the economical 120-horsepower inline-six to the powerful 271-horsepower Hi-Po 289 V-8, the Mustang appealed to a broad audience.

Though originally conceived as an affordable sports coupe for everyday drivers, the Mustang quickly found a place in racing. Ford recognized its potential and, in partnership with Carroll Shelby, developed the high-performance Shelby GT350, a track-ready version that dominated SCCA competitions.
