Perhaps there is no other body style that is more iconic than the classic American station wagon. Generations of Americans grew up within the large confines of the wonderful station wagon. Long before the advent of the minivan, the station wagon was a mainstay of the American transportation fabric. Whether it was hauling the groceries, picking the kids up from school, or the all-important Saturday night drive-in movie, the station wagon stood ready to perform its duties for the family in any way. Of course, there was no shortage of car companies willing to provide the motoring public with a beautiful wood-bodied wagon, but these were not inexpensive cars and the style and look of real wood usually carried a premium. With finishes of fine Mahogany or Birch, the wood-bodied wagons of the day would usually sell for more than the upper line convertible, but that premium also made for a grand entrance to the local restaurant or country club.
