Noted as being the first successful motor car to use an internal combustion engine, the 1886 Benz Patent Motorwagen is one of the most historically significant automobiles ever produced. Carl Benz began designing this tricycle automobile between 1883 and 1884 and then was granted a patent for his creation in 1886. Shortly after, the Benz Patent Motorwagen could be found putting along the streets of Mannheim. The first official sale of Karl Benz's creation would take place in 1887, which would forever change the automobile landscape.
Virtually identical to the original Benz Patent Motorwagen, which is still in existence and on display at the Deutsches Museum in Munich, Germany, is this 1886 Benz Patent Motorwagen Replica. Built to celebrate the centennial of the Benz, prominent British firm John Bentley Engineering built a very limited number of these replicas from 1986 to 1997, with the approval of Mercedes, of course. The mechanicals of this Patent Motorwagen include a rear-mounted 15-horsepower single-cylinder four-stroke engine and single-speed belt driven transmission that sends power to the large wire spoke rear wheels. Once this example was completed, it was given to Beverly Hills Mercedes, who maintained the car in their collection before donating it to The Zimmerman Automobile Driving Museum.
Admired and adored by tens of thousands while on display at the Zimmerman Automobile Driving Museum, this 1886 Benz Patent Motorwagen Replica is as close as it gets to owning the original Benz, and to owning the first motorcar that paved the way for all automobiles that can been seen today.
