1915 Hudson Boattail Racer

  • Built by Frank Buonnano, a protege of Luigi Chinetti
  • Participant of the Great Race on four different occasions

  • Original 1915 frame with a body designed to pay tribute to the Hudson Indy racecars

Engine -

Custom billet crankshaft

Custom connecting rods with specifically designed scoops for oil system.

Poured babbitt main and rod bearings. Hand fit to each journal (mains and rods)

External oil pump feeding engine. Main bearings are under oil pressure. Cam, timing chains are sprayed. Rod bearings are fed oil via a spray going into a tray and scooped by the connecting rods. After this was perfected, the car drove from Maine to Florida.

Still retains the original 1915 block, cylinder jug, and carburetor. Plus, many other small components. The original starter/generator combo is still there but does not do anything.

The original camshaft was sent out to be re-ground. This increased power dramatically.

Original water pump housing completely deteriorated so we made one from scratch out of a chunk of aluminum

Transmission -

1950's GM 3 speed with a mechanical overdrive. The car has done over 60MPH with this set up.

A custom bellhousing adaptor was made for this.

A GM flywheel was re-drilled to bolt to crankshaft and uses a basic GM clutch.

Custom shifter set-up to work with transmission.

Original (or original style) springs

Lever style shocks adapted to work. Period correct

Original wooden wheels

Original mechanical rear brakes - upgraded material done Rochester Clutch and brake

Jaguar XK120 front brakes were adapted. Custom linkage to operate both mechanical rear brake and hydraulic front together. You may also be able to adjust the brake bias with this linkage

Sway bar added to the front, Came from a 250 Ferrari

Custom fuel tank made and installed. Uses a brass cap from a vintage fire extinguisher.

Body -

Original grill shell and radiator combo. (original radiator is not used)

Original hood was lengthened

Original firewall was moved back

One off hand made wooden body structur

Custom aluminum body skin was made by The Panel Shop and fitted over wood frame

Body was designed to tribute 1915 Hudson racecar from Indy race

Storage in rear for spare tire

Cooler fitted behind passenger seat for drinks during rallys

Headlights are period-correct
