1916 Packard Twin Six 1-25 Runabout
The public reaction to the new Twin Six engine in 1915 was nothing short of sensational. Packard, already a leader in the luxury automotive market, consistently outpaced many of its high-end competitors. In its debut year, the Twin Six outsold Pierce-Arrow by an impressive four to one, and by the second year of production, that lead widened to nearly eight to one. Introduced in May 1915, the redesigned 1916 Twin Six took the automotive world by storm once again. The factory slogan in 1916 was, "The Twin Six Owns the Road" and indeed it did, and even after many years the slogan is still true to this day.
Known history of this upper-class automobile begins with it being produced in the last month of production in August of 1916 and then being delivered new to Mr. J.D. Harding of Chicago. History is unknown until a California-based collector acquired this Packard in the late 1990s/early 2000s and began a comprehensive restoration. This 1916 Twin Six then found its new home in the Zimmerman Automobile Driving Museum in the fall of 2005 when it was donated. Believed to be one of just three known surviving examples, this Twin Six is a true rarity and quality example of the early days of luxury motoring.
While on a drive by one of the staff members of the museum, the 88-horsepower 424-cubic-inch Twin Six engine had a misfire and has since seized up. Rather than spending the money to bring this example back to road-worthy conditions, the museum opted to use the funds in other areas of the museum to help enrich the overall experience and the decision was made to move this Packard to static display only, and remains poised for mechanical reconditioning.
The car of the "One Percent" in its day and recognized as a Full Classic® by the Classic Car Club America, this 109-year-old Packard Twin Six Convertible would make for a wonderful reconditioning project or as a continued static display showcasing the power and class of the wealthy in the early years of motoring.
