The combination of Harley J. Earl and Cadillac just seemed so natural. In 1918, Earl was designing custom bodywork for the Hollywood elite when the family business was sold to Don Lee, the West Coast Cadillac distributor. Earl found himself designing dozens of bodies for what was called the Don Lee Coach and Bodyworks. This led to a meeting with Cadillac President Lawrence P. Fisher, and in 1926 Earl was hired as a designer for the new LaSalle. Leaving California in 1927, Earl was on his way to Detroit where he would soon head the new GM "Art and Colour" division, later simply called the "Styling Section". Earl quickly climbed the corporate ladder. He stood 6'4, had a West Coast flair, and knew how to get his way. He integrated engineers into the Styling Department and filled his staff with talented people. Earl's designs and influences were felt throughout General Motors but most elegantly at Cadillac.

The 341 Series of 1928 were the first to be designed by Earl, which also ushered in a new V-8 engine that succeeded the 314-cubic-inch version. By 1929, the 90-degree V-8 engine was producing 95 horsepower and was backed by a synchromesh manual transmission. Paired with its elegant styling and colors, the 1929 Cadillacs were all the talk of the town.

Emerging from long-term collection ownership, this 1929 Cadillac Dual Cowl Phaeton, with its Fleetwood coachwork, was acquired by the Passport Collection 24 years ago and is being offered publicly for the first time since. A desirable example, thanks to its open dual cowl phaeton coachwork with a folding dividing windshield, the body is dressed in a pleasing silver while the fenders are finished in a complementing navy blue. The colors trickle into the cabin where the seats are upholstered in a gray leatherette and the dash is adorned in a navy-blue finish. Divided by the dual cowl and folding windshield, passengers in both the front and rear can enjoy open-air motoring at its finest and not worry about the wind in their faces. Well-equipped, this example is optioned with dual side-mounted spares topped with sideview mirrors, a trunk nestled into the rear, and a separate folding trunk rack.

Recognized as an approved Full Classic® by the Classic Car Club of America, this Cadillac is granted access to their various events held around the country, and equipped with a Cadillac V-8 engine, it would make a great choice on their CARavan driving tours. The brilliant Harley Earl clearly imposed his vision on this lovely Dual Cowl Phaeton, which combines the art of a great designer with trusted mechanicals and craftsmanship to make it an unforgettable American made automobile.
