1931 Auburn 8-98 Cabriolet
The cars of Errett Lobban Cord's Auburn Cord Duesenberg industrial empire certainly need no introduction in the world of fine motoring. Whether it was a Duesenberg Model J or Cord L-29, the style, charisma, and fine engineering of Cord's cars consistently ranked among the finest. Cord actually got his start with the corner piece of his automotive triad with Auburn. When Cord took over the ailing Auburn Automobile Company, the future looked bleak. But in just a few years, he had not only turned the company around but had also managed to become the leader of the entire company. Although the ride was short due to the Great Depression, the cars that E.L. Cord left us are still some of the most prestigious machines in the entire world. Any Auburn, Cord, or Duesenberg is a special car that carries with it an air of classic elegance seldom matched by any other car of the era.
The Auburn 8-98 played a key role in Auburn's success during the early 1930s by delivering high performance at a lower price point than many competitors. It was seen as an attractive alternative to more expensive luxury brands such as Packard or Cadillac. The combination of speed, affordability, and elegant design made the 8-98 a popular choice among consumers looking for a high-value automobile during the Great Depression. Additionally, Auburn's bold marketing strategies, such as setting speed records and promoting the cars' performance through endurance tests, helped solidify the brand's reputation. Crafted and styled under the direction of the famed Alan Leamy, the Auburn 8-98 remains sought-after for its Art Deco styling, engineering, and historical significance.
Acquired by the Passport Collection in 2008, this lovely, sleek, black and silver 1931 Auburn 8-98 Cabriolet is the subject of an older restoration that has since been lovingly maintained. Residing in a climate-controlled setting, the body panels are nice and tight, and the two-tone finish presents very well. Perched on top of a set of dazzling chrome wire wheels with AUBURN logo spinner hubcaps, it's equipped with a long list of desirable beauty accessories that further its appearance: a set of driving lights, dual horns, dual cowl lights, dual enclosed side-mounted spares adorned with sideview mirrors, a driver's side Sportlite spotlight, and a trunk rack topped with a color matched trunk.
Matching the impressive aesthetics is the performance which comes from a 268-cubic-inch Lycoming inline eight-cylinder engine that produces a smooth and even 98 horsepower. Backed by a three-speed manual transmission, this example is the ideal choice for classic car touring or events such as the CCCA CARavan tours, the annual ACD Club events, or the spring Enthusiast Driving Tour.
Known for their classy looks, fantastic colors, and outstanding performance of their day, these 1931 Auburns have since become the forefront of collectability, and this example is no exception. Having been maintained in the formidable Passport Collection for the last 17 years, this '31 Auburn Cabriolet patiently awaits to be enjoyed, shown, and driven by its next lucky caretaker.
