1933 Rolls-Royce Phantom II All-Weather Tourer
Introduced in 1929, the Phantom II was a significant advancement over its predecessor, featuring a refined 7.7-litre straight-six engine and a new chassis with improved suspension for superior ride quality and handling. Unlike mass-produced cars, Rolls-Royce supplied the chassis and running gear, allowing buyers to select bespoke coachwork from some of the world's most prestigious firms. Bodies for the Phantom II came from esteemed coachbuilders such as Hooper, Barker, Gurney Nutting, and Mulliner, each offering personalized design tailored to the customer's taste. The All-Weather Tourer style combined elegance with versatility, featuring a convertible top that offered open-air motoring or closed comfort. Only the wealthiest clientele could afford such a car, making the Phantom II a true symbol of prestige, individuality, and engineering excellence in the interwar motoring world.
Originally commissioned on October 19, 1932, this right-hand drive Phantom II Chassis No. 110MY was ordered by New York fruit importer A.A. Hutchinson, who had performance front of mind. Factory records indicate that Hutchinson specified a "Continental-type" engine, complete with enhanced suspension components and extra shock absorbers, details that set the tone for a uniquely sporting Rolls-Royce. To match this performance-focused mechanical setup, coachwork was entrusted to Hooper & Co., a prominent London firm that was originally founded in 1807 and renowned for building bodies for British royalty. Hooper & Co. was one of the best and most trusted firms when it came to custom Rolls-Royces.
Though technically an all-weather tourer, with roll-up windows and a well-padded convertible top, the Hooper body was far from conservative. It wore a dramatically raked windshield and window pillars, lending a sleek, almost wind-swept appearance. The folding top design sat flush when stowed, and the overall profile recalled the striking Brewster-bodied "Windblown" Phantom I and similar avant-garde designs from American firms like Rollston. One can't help but suspect Hutchinson and Hooper were drawing from transatlantic inspiration.
Following delivery to the U.S., 110MY passed through several prominent owners including R. Clark Hadley and Arthur P. Bond, before ultimately landing with Edward Ardis, a noted Rolls-Royce collector who began its restoration. The project continued through subsequent owners, including Lawrence and Jane MacElree and later Knox Kershaw, who commissioned restorer Sam Rawlins to finish the work in 1990. Under the care of the Knox Kershaw Collection for three decades, the current custodian would acquire this example in 2021. A Classic Car Club of America (CCCA) Full Classic®, this example is a welcome addition to their various shows and tours, as well as the many unique Rolls-Royce Owners' Club (RROC) gatherings held around the globe.
Today, still wearing its rich dark green livery and tan leather upholstery, this Phantom II remains mechanically sound and road-ready, now showing signs of wear, notably the paint, fitting for a 35-year-old restoration. With a unique blend of purposeful engineering and sophisticated styling, it stands out among Phantom IIs as a dynamic and distinctly American-influenced example, built for a distinguished and affluent gentleman who wanted both performance and striking presence.
