For the 1935 model year, Packard's superb Series 1207 models, all built on the 139-inch wheelbase, found an improved 473-cubic-inch V-12 engine that now produced 175 HP at 3200 RPM. With superior engineering skills, the engines in these Packard Twelves are considered by many to be the smoothest running multi-cylinder V-12s ever produced. Packard also showcased their modern and trendsetting styling as they introduced their own Streamline Moderne theme presenting ten different body styles with each model featuring fully skirted and flowing front fenders flanking the prominent "ox bow" grille shell and bright chrome grille, while fashionable and improved free-standing "bullet" headlights proved to provide brighter and more efficient lighting. During this period all of Packard's open car models were constructed and assembled by the skilled craftsmen under the direction of Raymond Dietrich, which included the jaunty model 821, Sport Phaeton. Considered a five-passenger model, with the fold-down rear seat armrest it actually was more suited to handle four very lucky passengers.

One of only four Sport Phaetons produced for 1935, this Packard was first delivered to a private owner in Lake Forest, Illinois. After his passing, the phaeton was acquired by a local resident, David Dangler. From Mr. Dangler this Packard would join the collection of Jay Gross and be displayed as a member of his Princeton Automobile Museum, in Princeton, Illinois, where it was exhibited until the facility closed its doors in 1963. It was then purchased by Spring Grove, Illinois resident and avid automotive connoisseur, Walter Cunny who, in the 1970s, commissioned a complete restoration conducted by Fuller Brothers Restorations of Clinton, Iowa. During this process, the dual side-mounted spares were added using original Packard Twelve fenders from a donor vehicle and were fitted with proper vintage front and rear seat heaters. When unveiled at the 1977 Classic Concours in Indiana it scored 99.25 points and two years later at the Indiana Grand Classic scored a perfect 100 points. In the February 1995 edition of Collectible Automobile, it was featured as part of an article covering the Packard Twelves from 1932 to 1939. In 1996, Dr. Gerald Greenfield of Federal Way, Washington purchased the car from Mr. Cunny and then traded it in 1998 to Joe Hayes of Chicago, bringing the car back to its home state. It would then become part of a well-known collection in Ohio before our consignor acquired this Phaeton in 2014. This Packard was invited and shown at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in 2014, the Concours of America in Michigan in 2016, and later that year at the Elegance at Hershey event.

As presented today, this car retains its restored beauty and under its current owner has seen recent mechanical attention paid to the steering box, brake and clutch boosters, and most recently was treated to a complete engine and radiator flush when a rebuilt water pump was installed. As evidence to its mechanical prowess, it has completed several tours and stands ready for many more. Riding on chrome wire wheels with proper black wall tires, the visual impact of the Full Classic® is truly a breathtaking experience. Finished in a deep rich maroon with beautiful beige leather seats, this magnificent machine is fitted with a black folding top and matching top boot cover. Included is a maintenance file and history of this car, with a copy of the Collectible Automobile magazine it was featured in. Whether being shown on the lawn of a prestigious concours or taking part in a classic car tour, this Sport Phaeton is certain to be the only one there and will present an air of elegance and quality at every turn.
