1937 Lincoln Model K V-12 Convertible Roadster
In 1931, Lincoln pulled out all the stops when they introduced the K-Series as the new flagship of the company's fleet. Wheelbases were long, body lines were smooth and sculpted, and, as if that weren't enough, a powerful V-12 engine made the K-Series a favorite of the elite. Offered until 1940, the finest of all the models would be offered in its last four model years, 1937 to 1940, which many will agree is the apex of all Lincoln styling. Offering more than 15 different body styles and a host of coach builders to choose from during the nine-year model run, customization was a major selling point for the Model K and would be the main reason just 15 of these 1937 Lincoln Model K V-12 Convertible Roadsters by LeBaron would be built. Even more scarce today, few survive, and this particular example is believed to be the only one with factory-mounted side spare wheels.
This rare and coveted 1937 Lincoln Model K's known history starts in 1952 when it would make a cameo appearance in the movie, "With a Song in my Heart," starring Susan Hayward and Rory Calhoun. It would remain in California for another five decades, when in 1999, it was purchased by Rick Parker of Maryland from another Lincoln and Continental Owners Club (LCOC) member, Jim Riffenburgh of California. Under Mr. Parker's ownership, this example was mechanically sorted, exhibited, and toured. It was also featured in the spring issue of the LCOC publication, Continental Comments. Ownership would change in 2005 and then again in 2015 when it was purchased by the Passport Collection, where it has since been maintained.
Built on an impressive 136-inch wheelbase, the silhouette is one the finest of the pre-war Art Deco era and one that leaves a lasting impression. Featuring unbroken front fender lines that incorporate headlights, dark maroon paint, subtle chrome bumpers, and a large, pronounced V-shape grille topped by a Greyhound radiator mascot, it captivates from all angles. Furthering its stance are classic wide whitewall tires, dual side-mounted enclosed spare wheels, a golf club door on the passenger side, and of course the rumble seat for when more space is needed.
Power is derived from a conservatively factory-rated 150-horsepower, 414-cubic-inch V-12 engine that is backed by a three-speed manual transmission. A solid axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs can be found in the front, while the rear is equipped with a full-floating axle and semi-elliptic leaf springs. Stopping power is attributed to the Bendix Duo-Servo mechanical drum brakes. This combination of items creates a smooth and quiet symphony of harmony while going down the road.
Most recently, this Model K was shown in the L1 Prewar Preservation Class at the 2024 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. A CCCA Full Classic®, this Lincoln would be a welcome addition to various events and tours, including the numerous CARavan tours held throughout the United States. Prized for their beauty and coveted V-12 power, this rare one of just 15 Model K Convertible Roadster by LeBaron, with its charming patinated body, is a handsome example of Lincoln's peak during the Classic Era.
