With America yet to enter World War II in 1940, the motor industry was still in full swing and Chevrolet, with its new slogan "Chevrolet's First Again," was one of the biggest sellers. For 1940, the models were designed, built, and priced to be first in sales again, as they had been eight of the last nine years. Three different models were offered, a Special DeLuxe, Master DeLuxe, and Master 85, all in varying body styles. From the factory, the 1940 DeLuxe Coupe was equipped with a dependable 85-horsepower, 216-cubic-inch inline six-cylinder engine, but thankfully, this example has been tastefully upgraded to a new engine setup, leaving it with a custom twist.

Many pre-war models like this 1940 Chevrolet DeLuxe have been cut, modified, or chopped by hot rodders and customizers, making it hard to find original body examples today. Retaining its original and unmodified '40s flamboyance and curves is this 1940 Chevrolet DeLuxe Custom Coupe, which has a custom twist under its original skin. During restoration, the dark black paint was professionally applied and all the chrome work presents well and shines nicely and evenly. The front and rear bumpers feature bumper guards, adding to its '40s stance. It rides on color-matched steel wheels with Chevrolet script hubcaps wrapped with Commander four-ply wide whitewall tires.

Being a business coupe model, the cabin features a single bench seat in the front, a spacious area in the rear, and a spacious trunk. The interior presents quite well and boasts some special features like a modern air-conditioning and heating system, as well as a rare optional DeLuxe Chevy spinner steering wheel which, if you are able to find one, will run you close to $5,000.

Under the hood is where the custom twist can be found, as power has been upgraded to a 1951 six-cylinder engine that is fitted with an Offenhauser intake manifold, upgraded dual carbs, and topped with a Wayne valve cover, all increasing horsepower and drivability. Other engine compartment upgrades include a Delco Remy alternator and 12-volt battery system.

A stylish DeLuxe model from the beloved '40s that retains its original looks and has been tastefully upgraded in all the right spots, this Custom Coupe makes for the ideal choice for a sunset drive, weekend cruiser, or vehicle to take to the local car show and meet.
