1953 MG TD Roadster

Few sports cars have enjoyed the lasting popularity of MG's long-running T-Series roadsters. Beginning with the TA in 1936, these light, attractive, and incredibly fun-to-drive cars opened a new world of affordable motoring enjoyment that captivated American GIs serving in Europe and took America by storm during peacetime, thanks to England's "Export or Die" industrial environment. The improved and updated TD appeared in 1949 specifically for the U.S. export market, with carefully refined handling and left-hand drive. Its much-stiffer welded chassis was derived from that of the Type Y saloon and featured boxed side rails, independent front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering, and new 15-inch ventilated wheels. The engine and gearbox of the TC were retained, as well as its classic body, now slightly widened and easily identified with new front and rear bumpers.
In 1953, Britain's Autocar wrote, "the feel of the car on the road inspires confidence and there is the impression that even an indifferent driver could make a good showing behind the wheel; however long the journey, the actual driving of the car is beguiling all the way." In short, the TD gave the MG faithful in America yet another reason to fall in love with the British marque all over again.

Draped in an older restoration, the body has mellowed and presents as a wonderful driver example. Under the bonnet is an MG four-cylinder engine, which is backed by a four-speed manual gearbox. Other equipment includes an MG steering wheel, a single wind wing, and a rear-mounted full-size spare wheel and tire. A classic example of a beloved British sports car finished in iconic British Racing Green, this little MG TD would make a delightful example to one's garage or as one's weekend cruiser.
