1956 Mercury Montclair ‘Creamsicle’ Convertible
The 1956 Mercury Montclair Convertible was a standout in Mercury's lineup during a pivotal era of American automotive design. Introduced as part of the second generation of Mercury vehicles, the Montclair represented the brand's ambition to deliver high-performance luxury wrapped in a bold, stylish package. Named after the affluent New Jersey suburb, the Montclair was positioned as Mercury's top-tier offering, showcasing the company's emphasis on elegance and innovation. The 1956 model, in particular, epitomized the mid-century design trends with its dramatic use of chrome, two-tone paint schemes, and streamlined aesthetics inspired by the Jet Age.
Under the hood, the Montclair Convertible was powered by Mercury's robust 312-cubic-inch V-8 engine, producing 225 horsepower when paired with the automatic "Merc-O-Matic" transmission. This performance-oriented drivetrain not only emphasized power but also contributed to Mercury's reputation for durability and smooth operation.
The convertible variant, with its power-operated top, was the epitome of luxury and flair, catering to buyers who sought open-air motoring with high-end touches. Its spacious interior, finished in premium materials, offered a blend of comfort and style, while the exterior showcased a distinctive grille that made it unmistakably Mercury. The Montclair's success was bolstered by its competitive pricing, which positioned it as an attainable alternative to more expensive luxury models while still offering a similar level of prestige.
Known as Creamsicle and carrying all the luxury and prestige it did when it rolled out of the Metuchen Assembly Plant, this 1956 Mercury Montclair Convertible makes a statement wherever it is driven. Getting its nickname from its factory original colors, the body wears a tasty two-tone Persimmon and Colonial White color scheme, while the interior follows suit with a Persimmon and white vinyl interior. Other features that add to its lore are the use of flashy chrome throughout, a white power convertible top, and classic wide whitewall tires that enclose wheels with color matched beauty rings.
Equipment on this cruiser includes a 312-cubic-inch V-8 engine, three-speed Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, a power convertible top, and a rear continental kit. A theme throughout The Great Outdoors Collection, Creamsicle was the recipient of a thorough mechanical freshening to ensure it is ready to be enjoyed. Taking place in December of 2024 and performed by Motor City Solutions Hot Rods & Restorations in Michigan, the power brake booster and master cylinder were replaced and four new Coker Classic whitewall radial tires were mounted. Other items in 2024 consisted of installing a new mechanical fuel pump, removing all the fuel lines and the gas tank to completely clean and go through, and rebuilding the power steering pump.
A charming example from the mid '50s that has earned a reputable nickname, this mechanically fit Mercury Montclair Convertible will transport one back in time when they shift into drive and float down the road on their next memorable trip.
