Produced between 1958 and 1962, the 2000 Spider was significantly rarer than its smaller counterpart, the Giulietta Spider, of which approximately 17,000 were built. Priced at $5,365, it was considerably more expensive than the Giulietta as well. Powering the Touring-bodied roadster was a 1,975cc four-cylinder engine featuring twin overhead camshafts driven by a duplex chain, hemispherical combustion chambers, and dual side-draft Solex carburetors, which all worked together to deliver 131 horsepower. This setup allowed the car to surpass 100 mph with ease. A fully synchronized five-speed gearbox provided smooth high-speed touring, while its large Alfin drum brakes offered exceptional stopping power for the era. Designed by Carrozzeria Touring, the stylish unibody sat on a 98-inch wheelbase, foreshadowing the six-cylinder 2600 convertible introduced in 1962. In total, a mere 3,400 2000 Spiders were produced between 1958 and 1961. While many of these examples were taken by the harsh reality of father time and neglect, they have become a rare Italian breed today.

Crafted at the Alfa Romeo plant on February 11th, 1959, this example was said to have been delivered new to Hoffman Motor Car Company in New York in its current left-hand-drive Touring spider body configuration. A model that is known for its excellent road manners, it was said to have been minimally enjoyed and aesthetically maintained for 20-some years, as in the 1980s it was found in solid and original condition with the odometer reading less than 70,000 miles. Enjoyed in its impressive original state for 30 years, the decision was made to commence a comprehensive restoration that would begin in 2013 and carry on for three years. Stripped back to bare chassis and metal, its elegant Touring body was finished in its original factory color of Grigio Biacca. Every detail of the exterior was addressed with the original bumpers and trim being re-chromed in a mirroring shine. The interior followed suit with the restoration and was trimmed in its original red, resulting in a quintessential Alfa Romeo color scheme.

Mechanically, the high-performance twin-cam inline four-cylinder engine was fully gone through and rebuilt. Furthermore, the five-speed manual gearbox, brakes, and suspension were rebuilt and restored to as-new condition. Even though the restoration was completed in 2016, this Alfa has traveled less than 1,000 miles and it would appear it was completed more recently because of its impressive current state. The Passport Collection acquired this example from a Northern California-based collection that had owned this Spider for over a decade and had commissioned the extensive restoration.

This well-restored 1959 Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider is a testament to Italian craftsmanship and timeless design. With its striking presence, refined performance, and meticulous attention to detail, it offers an unparalleled driving experience with its nimble Touring body. Whether gracing the show fields or carving through scenic roads during an exclusive driving event, this exceptional Alfa is ready to be enjoyed and admired.
