The Corvette was first introduced in 1953 as Chevrolet's answer to European sports cars such as Jaguar and MG. However, early models with a six-cylinder engine and automatic transmission were criticized for lacking performance. Chevrolet responded by introducing a V-8 engine in 1955, transforming the Corvette into a serious competitor. By 1957, the Rochester Ramjet fuel injection system was introduced, making the Corvette one of the first production cars to feature fuel injection.

The 1959 Corvette 'Fuelie' Roadster was part of a continued evolution, refining both performance and styling. This model featured a 283-cubic-inch small-block V-8 engine with the optional fuel injection, which significantly increased horsepower and efficiency compared to carbureted versions. The highest-output Fuelie variant produced 290 horsepower, making the 1959 Corvette one of the fastest American cars of its time. The Fuelie, a nickname for fuel-injected Corvettes, was a game changer for Chevrolet and the American auto industry. It demonstrated that fuel injection technology could improve both power and fuel efficiency, paving the way for future performance advancements. These Corvettes became highly desirable among racers and enthusiasts, as they offered superior acceleration and reliability compared to carbureted models.

Powered by its numbers-matching fuel-injected 290-horsepower 283-cubic-inch V-8 engine and paired with a four-speed manual transmission, this example is about as rare as they get for the model year. Equipped with the highest horsepower option, it is also dressed to impress in correct Tuxedo Black, which is said to be its original color. In total, 1,594 Tuxedo Black Corvettes were produced in 1959 and 745 examples checked the box for the 290-horsepower fuel-injected engine. Corvette aficionados believe just 22 are known to be so equipped with this color and engine combination.

Benefiting from an extensive comprehensive five-year restoration, this Corvette is highly detailed inside and out. Reportedly accumulating NOS parts for 20 years for the restoration, this Fuelie was a former resident of the Dennis Zentner collection. It is noted that during the restoration, an extensive rebuild of the driveline components and installation of an optional quick ratio steering box was completed, and that the original body panels and frame remain. Close inspection reveals that the chrome and stainless all appear to be original or NOS and refinished to show standards. The cabin is finished in matching black and includes a center-mounted clock and radio.

Having used NOS parts throughout, and given its rare engine and correct color combination, believed to be one of only 22, this '59 Fuelie is an excellent candidate for the National Corvette Restorers Society (NCRS) judged events that take place throughout the country. Or, you can just enjoy the looks of this sinister, sexy, and striking American sports car.
