1959 Porsche 356A 1600S Convertible D
The Speedster, introduced in 1954, was a stripped-down, lightweight version of the 356 aimed at enthusiasts and racers. However, its spartan nature - low-cut windshield, minimal interior, and side curtains instead of roll-up windows - limited its appeal as a road car. By 1958, Porsche sought to create a more livable alternative while maintaining the Speedster's sporty aesthetics. Thus, the 356 Convertible D was born.
Produced for just the 1959 model year, the Convertible D retained the Speedster's lower profile but incorporated several key refinements. To build this new version, Karosseriewerke Drauz was tasked. A German coachbuilder founded in 1900 in Heilbronn, they initially specialized in crafting horse-drawn carriages before transitioning to automobile bodies. By the mid-20th century, Drauz became known for its work with various manufacturers, including Porsche. In 1958, Drauz was commissioned to build the bodies for the Porsche 356A Convertible D. The most notable changes included a taller windshield, providing better wind protection, and roll-up side windows for improved weather sealing. A more comfortable, padded bucket seat replaced the bare-bones Speedster seats, and an optional removable hardtop made it more suitable for year-round driving. These upgrades made the Convertible D a more practical yet still lightweight open-top Porsche. Only 1,331 units of the Convertible D were built, making it a desirable collector's car today. It marked a transition toward more refined Porsche roadsters, eventually leading to the 356B Roadster in 1960. The model represents a perfect blend of sportiness and usability, embodying Porsche's philosophy of continuous improvement while staying true to its racing roots.
Produced on November 26th, 1958, this example is cloaked in period Ruby Red over a tan interior with subtle complementing chrome trim pieces laid throughout the body. As noted on the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, original optional equipment when delivered new includes, a driver's side headrest, reclining seats, 'Ponto Stabil' mirrors, sealed beam headlights, USA bumpers, an antenna, and a Becker radio. Benefitting from a previous comprehensive restoration that still presents very well, it is an ideal choice for touring and driving events. A rear-mounted trunk rack with leather straps is present for when one desires more space for their luggage. Most recently in 2025, a professional service and tune-up was completed which included restoring the brake system and fitting new Pirelli Cinturato CA67 tires.
Produced by Drauz Karosseriewerke and praised as being the most practical model of all the 356s, this one-year-only restored 1600S Convertible D with charming colors would make an excellent touring vehicle for the numerous noted sports car and Porsche Club of America events scattered throughout the U.S. and abroad.
