1960 Ford Thunderbird Convertible
The generational changes of the Ford Thunderbird read like no other car in American automotive history. Starting as a simple two-seater that defined the new "personal luxury" car market, it went on to dazzle the motoring public in fine fashion. The next generation Thunderbird came in the form of a larger and more spacious car with room for four and a stylish look that went on to break sales records. Before it was over, ten generations of Thunderbirds would be carried all the way into 1997 with the reprisal of the two-seater in 2002. Certainly, the Thunderbird was a success beyond anyone's wildest dreams, but the early examples clearly show the foundation that set the stage for its success.
Offered here is an excellent example of the second-generation Thunderbird, a 1960 convertible finished in a delightful red with a white power convertible top. This outstanding example from Ford's heritage looks just as good today as it did back in 1960, but performance twice as good, thanks to the over $50,000 in mechanical work and upgrades that were applied between 2022 and 2024. Acquired by The Great Outdoors Collection within the last few years, this Thunderbird received the same treatment the rest of the cars in the collection did in order to be mechanically fit and ready to be enjoyed at any given moment. Documented by invoices on file, which can be seen on Worldwide Auctioneers' website and at the Document Station during the auction, the $50,000 in work included replacing most of the undercarriage components and suspension for a smoother ride, installing new brakes, replacing all four tires, ensuring all the electrical components were either checked or replaced, and going through the fuel tank and fuel pump. Most importantly, in December of 2022, the 300-horsepower, 352-cubic-inch V-8 engine was tastefully upgraded with an electronic fuel injection system which cost over $4,700 and was installed by Motor City Solutions Hot Rods & Restorations in Taylor, Michigan, adding to its drive and reliability.
A luxury vehicle in its day, this Convertible comes equipped with an array of amenities which include, power steering, power brakes, power windows, power seat, power convertible top, and Ford Magic Aire System. Other features include, a Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission, a rear-mounted continental kit, a modern "retro look" Custom Autosound Bluetooth radio, wire wheels, classic whitewall tires, and a Jet Age-style interior. The Ford Thunderbird is a car that captured the very heart of America for over five decades, something very few cars can attest to. This example, with its many upgrades and mechanically sound components, is an enthusiast's dream and would be a delightful weekend cruiser for just yourself or with three of your favorite people.
