1961 Ford Galaxie Sunliner Convertible
The Ford Galaxie was introduced in 1959 as Ford's top-tier full-size car. The name was inspired by the space race era and symbolized modernity and progress. The Galaxie replaced the earlier Fairlane 500 at the top of the Ford lineup but retained many of its beloved features. The Sunliner emphasized long, sleek lines, dramatic tailfins (on early models), and eye-catching chrome trim. It captured the exuberance of late-50s and early-60s American car design. The early Sunliner models were characterized by their dual-headlight setups, bold grilles, and sweeping tailfins. But by the next decade, 1960, Ford introduced a more rounded, aerodynamic design for the Galaxie. The Sunliner Convertible variant was one of the Galaxie's body styles, showcasing the era's fascination with open-top motoring. It was designed as a stylish, comfortable, and luxurious vehicle, and made for quite the memorable option in the '60s, as well as today.
Sold new at Emmaus Ford of Allentown, Pennsylvania, this Sunliner Convertible was purchased with an array of factory options which are documented on copies of the original window sticker and sales invoice. Those options include the Thunderbird 352-cubic-inch V-8 engine, $212 Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission, power steering, and fresh-air heater defroster.
This example was purchased by just its third owner, a South Carolina-based enthusiast in November of 1993. Under his ownership, this example underwent a complete restoration in the early 2000s, keeping it in its original Raven Black (A) over red and white (Trim 95) color scheme. After the restoration was completed, it was invited and shown at the Hilton Head Island Concours d'Elegance. Parting ways with this Convertible in 2021 after 28 years of ownership, The Great Outdoors Collection would welcome it into their collection soon after.
Under the current collection's care, this Ford Galaxie underwent a complete mechanical servicing to the tune of $55,000 in 2023, which is documented by invoices on file. The extensive work included replacing and going through the entire suspension, transmission, rear axle, engine, and wiring systems. Other specific major work included installing a new electronic fuel injection system with a new intake manifold that cost over $6,000, upgrading to front disc brakes, upgrading to a vintage-style AM/FM radio housed in the factory location and mounting four new 15-inch tires.
Accompanying the sale of this Galaxie Sunliner are copies of the original window sticker and sales invoice, two 1961 Ford service manuals, the aforementioned service records, and a red convertible boot cover. With just four known owners from new, and the recipient of a recent mechanical overhaul, this example presents as the ideal choice for one to use on a weekly basis or as their go-to automobile for driving events, shows, such as the annual Enthusiast Driving Tour.
