1965 Backdraft Motorsports Cobra
The Shelby Cobra is one of the most legendary sports cars ever created, blending American muscle with European design. Its origins trace back to the early 1960s when Carroll Shelby envisioned a lightweight, high-performance roadster that could dominate the track. Shelby partnered with British manufacturer AC Cars, which supplied the chassis, while Ford provided the powerful V-8 engines. The result was the Shelby Cobra, first introduced in 1962.
The early 260 and 289 models were already impressive, but the Cobra became truly fearsome with the introduction of the 427 Cobra in 1965. With its widened chassis and monstrous 7.0-liter Ford V-8, the 427 Cobra could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just over four seconds, making it one of the fastest cars of its era. The Cobra achieved massive success in racing, securing wins against Ferrari and Chevrolet Corvettes. However, due to high costs, production ended in 1967, making original Cobras highly valuable today.
In the decades since, the Cobra's legend has inspired many companies to create continuation models and replicas. Firms like Backdraft Racing, Superformance, and Factory Five Racing specialize in producing modernized versions of the classic Cobra. These companies use updated materials, refined engineering, and modern drivetrains while preserving the car's unmistakable shape and raw performance. Backdraft Racing, in particular, has become well-known for its high-quality turnkey Cobras, integrating features like BMW-based independent suspension and powerful Coyote or Roush V-8 engines, making them more comfortable and drivable while retaining the brutal performance of the original.
Finished in a smooth F8 Green with Backdraft's custom Black Out Package, this '65 Backdraft Racing Cobra is a menacing example that retains unmistakable Cobra aesthetics with raw modern-day performance. It is quite likely to hear this example screaming down the road well before you see it; power is derived from a monstrous 560-horsepower 7.0-liter Roush 427-cubic-inch V-8 engine that creates a harmonious sound via the ceramic-coated headers and aggressive dual side exhaust pipes. Built for pure driving excitement, a TKX five-speed manual transmission and 8.8 independent rear with 3.55 gears provide precise power delivery, while adjustable coil overs and power four-wheel disc brakes ensure optimal handling and stopping power.
The two-person cockpit is finished with black leather and Alcantara inserts throughout and features heated seats for those brisk morning drives. The Alcantara steering wheel, carbon fiber dash with bomber gauges, glovebox, heater, and SABELT four-point harnesses provide a cockpit built for both function and aesthetics. To round out the exterior stance, this roadster features a single roll bar, dual side mirrors, and true knock-off 18-inch Halibrand-style wheels.
Thanks to Backdraft Racing, the spirit of the Shelby Cobra remains alive and well, offering enthusiasts a chance to own and experience one of history's most exciting cars, and this thoughtfully crafted Roush 427 powered example will certainly quench one's thirst looking to experience and feel a glimpse of the legendary Cobra name.
