1967 Aston Martin DB6 Vantage
Introduced at the October 1965 London Motor Show, the new Aston Martin DB6 was cloaked in hand-formed aluminum bodywork. Retaining the highly attractive covered headlamps of the DB4GT/DB5, the DB6 was the product of advanced aerodynamic principles, with its revised tail design influenced by the pioneering work of Dr. Wunibald Kamm. Already proven on 'Project' racing cars at Le Mans, the new tail treatment of the DB6 was claimed to give a 30 percent reduction in lift at high speeds. Perhaps most importantly, the DB6 also featured heightened passenger comfort with greater headroom and useful rear seating, rendering the DB6 a true Grand Tourer capable of seating four.
Comprehensive standard features, including rich Connolly leather upholstery, belied the impressive performance of the DB6 and its lusty 4.0-litre DOHC inline six-cylinder power plant. Delivering 282 horsepower in basic form, it propelled the DB6 from rest to 60 mph in about six seconds, enroute to a 140-mph top-end charge. A five-speed ZF gearbox and four-wheel disc brakes were standard DB6 equipment, with power steering now optional. Even greater performance was available with the ultimate factory-spec, 325-horsepower engine breathing deeply through its triple twin-choke Weber carburetors. With the DB6 Vantage, period magazine road testers reported 147-mph maximum speeds and acceleration from 0-100 mph in just 15 seconds.
In all, as few as 1,575 DB6 Coupes were produced along two distinct series between September 1966 and the end of production in November 1970. Many DB6s were originally owned by the era's business, entertainment, and social elites. Among them were Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, and Paul (later Sir Paul) McCartney of The Beatles, who is reputed to have recorded the original song lyrics to the massive White Album hit song "Hey Jude" on a reel-to-reel tape recorder mounted inside his DB6.
Equipped with the desirable Vantage specifications from the factory, this 1967 DB6 is the most desirable and powerful version from the British make. Said to have been delivered new in the UK with a right-hand-drive configuration, the original owner also checked the box for desirable equipment that includes the five-speed manual gearbox, chrome wire wheels, a power-operated antenna, a heated rear windshield, and a Borg & Beck clutch.
Acquired by a U.S.-based collector, this example was imported to the states and sent to renowned Bay Area restoration shop, The Pit Stop Automotive, for an extensive refurbishment that totaled over $80,000, which is documented by invoice records on file. The Pit Stop is responsible for the RHD to LHD conversion and the all-new interior that consists of black Connolly leather and period-correct Wilton wool carpeting. Under The Pit Stop's care, the mechanicals were also tended to, most notably refurbishing the car's brakes, suspension and three Weber carburetors. Equipped with desirable factory Vantage spec, the numbers-matching six-cylinder engine produces an impressive 325 horsepower, while the factory five-speed manual gearbox delivers a smooth transition between gears. Furthering its drivability, especially when at lower speeds, an EZ reversible power steering system was equipped.
Most recently under the Passport Collection's care, this DB6 partook in the Copperstate 1000 and Colorado Grand Driving Tour, with the owner reporting that this example performed wonderfully and was a blast to tour throughout the mountainsides. Best known for its excellent handling capabilities and impressive performance as it is a desirable Vantage spec, it also carries many of the factory equipment options one would wish for. Comprehensively restored and finished in fashionable iconic silver over black, it is a sophisticated gentlemen's British sports car that's ready to be enjoyed by a new owner.
