1967 Maserati Ghibli 4.7 Coupe
Named after an exotic, hot and dusty North African wind current, Maserati's sleek Ghibli debuted at Turin in 1966. Immediately, the Ghibli enjoyed praise from the motoring press and intense demand from the era's wealthiest and most discerning buyers, despite its $19,000 MSRP. In America, the Ghibli's high-profile owners included none other than NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain and even Ford Motor Company CEO, Henry Ford II. Cloaked in highly seductive bodywork, initially a coupe but joined by a Spyder from 1969, the Ghibli was penned by Italian design genius, Giorgetto Giugiaro, whose career culminated in "Car Designer of the Century" honors in 1999 and the coveted Matita d'Oro (Golden Pencil) award in 2017. The Ghibli's performance was - and remains - electrifying, with power delivered by Maserati's race-bred DOHC, dry-sump 4.7-litre V-8 engine breathing through a quartet of Weber twin-choke carburetors and mated to a choice of ZF five-speed or automatic gearboxes. While capable of 'supercar' performance levels comparable to Lamborghini's outrageous mid-engine Miura and Ferrari's harder-edged 365 GT/4 Daytona, the Ghibli remains an equal today for its exceptional 2+2 comfort, all-around drivability, balance, and forgiving handling. Just 1,274 Ghiblis were produced in total through 1972. Today, the Ghibli continues to exemplify Maserati's unique character and defy the passage of multiple decades.
Offered here is a first year and early production Ghibli finished in its stunning factory original livery of Blue Sera over Senape. This outstanding example was completed at Maserati's Modena workshops in July of 1967, and according to its Maserati Factory records, it was delivered new to Firenze, Italy. An early production example, it was just the 67th unit produced and of course completed with the beloved factory features that came on these early examples, such as a smooth non-vented hood, chrome bumpers, Campagnolo knock-off wheels, a wooden steering wheel and shift knob, and toggle switches. The records will also show it was delivered new with a BorgWarner automatic transmission; however, this might have been an error as during its extensive restoration there were no signs of this, and it has been known for multiple decades to retain a manual gearbox.
According to previous owners, this Ghibli's first owner was a well-respected racetrack owner in Italy. History picks back up when it was sold from 30 years of ownership in a Wisconsin collection then on to a Florida collector in 2018. Under their stewardship, this example received an extensive 26-month comprehensive restoration carried out by Milestone Motorcars in Delray Beach, Florida. Documented by extensive photos and invoice files, the body was stripped to bare metal and began as a blank canvas, ensuring every little detail and surface space was addressed. The outcome is truly stunning, finished in its original livery over a sporting leather interior that would appear as though no one has ever even sat in it. During the restoration, the numbers-matching 4.7-litre V-8 engine, five-speed manual gearbox, suspension, and brakes were also fully tended to. Well-documented and well-presented, it is arguably one of the nicest Maserati Ghiblis available today.
