1968 Chevrolet Chevelle Nomad ‘Restomod’ Station Wagon
The iconic Nomad station wagon was first introduced in 1955. By far the sportiest wagon of its day, the Nomad name became legendary and made owning a station wagon cool for the first time. The name was used by Chevrolet until it was phased out in favor of the Impala Station Wagon after the 1961 Model year. After a six-year hiatus, Chevrolet revived the Nomad nameplate for the 1968 model year. Again, denoting a station wagon, the Nomad was now part of the intermediate Chevrolet Chevelle model line, replacing the Chevelle 300 station wagon. In stark contrast to its two previous iterations, the 1968 Nomad served as the lowest-price Chevelle station wagon before being retired again after the 1972 model year. Marketed strictly as a six-passenger vehicle, the Nomad was not offered with a third-row seat in 1968. A total of 45,500 Chevelle wagons were produced for the 1968 Model year; however, only 6,340 wore the iconic Nomad nameplate, designated by a 132 in the first numbers of the VIN number as this car has, making them highly sought-after today.
This rare Nomad has been restored and thoughtfully upgraded in just the right places, starting with the installation of a powerful 6.2-liter V-8 LS3 crate engine that has been professionally tuned by the noted LS3 performance specialist shop Big 3 Racing to ensure that every drop of power is extracted. The engine bay is clean and the big engine is kept cool with a large aluminum radiator. A front to back modern wiring system by American Wire ensures reliable operation of the engine and all its accessories. The engine breathes out through a throaty three-inch dual exhaust system equipped with Magnaflow mufflers. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a Tremec GM TKO 600 five-speed manual transmission and a 3.73 Positraction rear end fitted with a finned aluminum cover. This rare Nomad's road manners are greatly enhanced with power steering, power brakes with front discs, and a Ride Tech suspension that includes beefy sway bars both front and rear. Slightly lowered and running on 17-inch custom alloy wheels cleverly made to resemble 1968 Chevelle five-spoke SS wheels, mounted with Diamond Back Classic low-profile 275/40ZR-17 Redline radial tires, this wagon has a confident stance that evokes power and speed.
Finished attractively in its original color of Butternut Yellow, the smooth body lines are accented with a factory-style 1968 Chevelle SS396 hood lifted with custom hood hinges, rear airfoil, tinted glass, and brilliant chrome and brightwork. Inside, the interior is custom trimmed in Saddle vinyl upholstery with comfortable cloth inserts and matching custom upholstered door panels. Interior upgrades and amenities include a modern air-conditioning system, white-faced Dakota analog gauges with digital odometer, billet steering wheel, tilt steering column, floor shifter with Tremec logo shift ball, and a Bluetooth enabled retro stereo with speakers mounted in custom kick panels.
This stylish Restomod is a proven touring machine, with participation in the national Hot Rod Power Tour. One of the events on the Hot Rod Power Tour included Dyno testing where this wagon pumped out 550 HP at the crank and 435 HP to the rear wheels. Rare, powerful, reliable, and a thrill to drive, this exceptional 1968 Chevelle Nomad Station Wagon is ready to show off at the next Cars & Coffee gathering, trip to the store, or for another transcontinental road trip.
