Ford Motor Company had long realized that success at the racetrack was integral to success in the showroom. "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday" became a winning marketing strategy as much as a slogan. During the 1960s, most of the focus in motorsports was on NASCAR and NHRA drag racing where acceleration and high sustained speeds were the name of the game. However, that would soon change with the introduction of the 'Trans-Am Series' by the Sports Car Club of America.

The Ford Mustang Boss 302 was a high-performance, limited production model offered for only two years to homologate the car for this new series. The Trans-Am Series proved to be wildly popular and featured Challengers, 'Cudas, Camaros, Cougars, and Mustangs as well as some of the most famous names in all of motorsports like Roger Penske, Mark Donohue, Dan Gurney, George Follmer, and Parnelli Jones. The culmination of Ford's efforts was realized when the Bud Moore-prepared Ford Mustang Boss 302 driven by Parnelli Jones won the Trans-Am Championship in 1970. The success of the Boss 302 on the track drove traffic to the showroom and sales took off.

For the Boss 302, the entire vehicle package was geared toward road racing where handling was at a premium, and it included a competition suspension, lower ride height, front disc brakes, larger sway bars, heavier-duty spindles, and reinforced shock towers. With the high-revving, solid-lifter Boss 302 V-8 engine and its free-breathing Cleveland-style heads mated to a close-ratio four-speed, Ford knew it had a winner. The Boss 302 was as successful on the showroom floor as it was on the racetrack, and just over 1,628 were produced in 1969. That number would rise drastically the next year, as over 7,000 examples would be produced in 1970, making the first-year examples exceedingly harder to find.

Finished in its original striking color of Bright Yellow (9), this 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 302 is the recipient of a cosmetic restoration. A former resident of the noted McMurrey Family Collection of Mustangs, this Boss is one of just 338 examples to be finished in this color over a Black Kiwi (2A) vinyl interior. Documented on the original sales invoice and Deluxe Marti Report, this Boss was produced on May 26th, 1969, and sold new at Palmetto Ford in Charleston, South Carolina. It left the factory with an array of options which include power front disc brakes, a 3:91 Traction-Lok differential, desirable four-speed manual transmission with a Hurst shifter, special handling suspension, and AM radio. Under the aggressive hood is a universally loved 302-cubic-inch V-8 engine that is from the height of the muscle car era.

Accompanying the sale and documenting its origins is a Deluxe Marti Report, its original sales invoice, and a large folder filled with invoice records. Ready to leave the Passport Collection's climate-controlled stable, this first-year, four-speed Boss 302 in its Bright Yellow paint will surely catch attention and praise wherever its next lucky owner takes it.
