1969 Plymouth Satellite GTX Restomod
The muscle car era of the late 1960s and early 1970s saw The Big Three U.S. automakers waging battles for the largest displacement and highest horsepower numbers they could possible squeeze out of their cars. GM, Ford, and Chrysler all produced vehicles that have become legendary, but one division within Chrysler would arguably make the most noise: Mopar. Named the Road Runner, it was a no-frills high-performance automobile that captured enthusiasts of all generations, thanks to its clever marketing and name. While successful, Chrysler decided to use that momentum and introduce the GTX model, which was an upscale version. The GTX came standard with features such as power steering and power disc brakes and offered the beloved high powered Hemi engines of the day.
While some prefer to return these fast cars to their original specifications, there is a movement within the classic car community to upgrade these cars with more modern suspensions, braking and other creature comforts designed to enhance the drivability and performance of these cars. The terms Pro Street, Pro-Touring, and Restomod are used, indicating modern upgrades lurk underneath the bodies of these cars.
A stunning, award-winning example of a top-shelf build, this 1969 Plymouth GTX Restomod was originally born a triple black, four-speed console car with a 440-cubic-inch V-8 engine, per its fender tag. While the silhouette and dynamic lines of the original car still exist, the upgrades to this GTX are extensive. Taken down to the bare metal, all the body panels were tended to and then finished with its current livery of Toxic Sunburst Orange with black racing stripes. A factory-correct black vinyl roof is also present. To round out its appearance, a set of custom Budnik wheels wrapped in Nitto tires can be found on all four corners.
Underneath the hood lurks a high-performance engine that has been dressed to impress. The recipient of a high horsepower heart transplant, this GTX features a stroked 512-cubic-inch V-8 engine that features a polished March serpentine pulley system that provides an additional punch. Mated to the engine is an 18-spline Hemi four-speed manual transmission with a hydraulic clutch and two McLeod clutch discs that transmit power to the Dana 60 rear end and 3.54:1 gear. The roar of the engine is unmistakable thanks to the custom exhaust, TTI polished/ceramic coated headers, and three-inch H-pipe system with stainless tips. Stopping power is provided courtesy of Wilwood four-wheel disc brakes with six-piston front calipers and four-piston rear calipers along with a Wilwood master cylinder and proportioning valve. Occupants are treated to a smooth ride, especially while touring, due to the front and rear Hotchkis TVS suspension.
Just as impressive is the cabin, which has been restored by Legendary Interiors to a more original look. Before the bucket seats and carpet were installed, the entire cabin was inlaid with thermal and noise suppression materials to dampen the symphony of noise the upgraded engine and exhaust produces. One will be pleased to find a Vintage Air air-conditioning system and an upgraded dash that features a Dakota Digital gauge system and push-button start.
No stranger to being the center of attention, this Plymouth went on a winning spree in 2023, capturing seven different Best of Show and People's Choice Awards at events that each had over 350 cars in the running. Most impressively, this GTX scored 992 out of 1,000 points at the 2023 Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals (MCACN) in Chicago, Illinois. At MCACN, it also took home the Chuck Miller Award and a Blue Ribbon. A highly attractive, award-winning build, this 1969 Plymouth Satellite GTX Restomod offers its next owner an automobile that can be enjoyed on tours with its modern features, continuously shown at events, or simply used as a work of art to display and admire in one's garage or collection.
