During the early 1960's development of Ford's new sport compact, a lot of names were proposed for their upcoming model. While Mustang would become the ultimate winner, a close runner-up was the Cougar. As soon as it was established that Mustang was a winner, plans were put into motion to create a counterpart for the Mercury line of automobiles. One of those involved in the project, C Gayle Warnock, latched onto the Cougar name and aimed the entire Mercury sales team to endorse the new "Sign of the Cat". A bit more luxurious than Mustang, Cougar was also a sales winner, and soon a GT edition was released. For 1969, a new exclusive Cougar package was offered, and its name said it all, "Eliminator". That year, the small block 302-cubic-inch V-8 was the standard engine in Eliminator, and a lot of performance-enhancing add-ons made it a popular option. For 1970, the base power plant was upgraded to the "Cleveland" 351-cubic-inch V-8 sporting 300 horsepower. Optional transmissions allowed the owners to customize the driveline for their cars and most were ordered with the 3.25:1 rear axle. In addition to the more powerful engine, the design cues added to the visual impact of this performance compact. Up front, a black stripe ran from the center of the grille and continued up the hood which was described by Mercury as "tough." Steel wheels were painted black, regardless of body color, and adorned with the center hubcaps and trim rings for that total performance look. A special two-spoke steering wheel with center pad horn was part of the Eliminator package and to finish off these handsome performance machines was a long list of even higher performance options and convenience items.

Given a body-off-the-frame restoration, this beautiful Eliminator is a prime example of a motoring masterpiece. Finished in Competition Green, it is fitted with the Decor Interior package which features bucket seats with black vinyl bolsters accented with black houndstooth inserts. The 300-horsepower 351-cubic-inch V-8 engine has been restored to factory specifications and runs smoothly. Backed by an FMX Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission and 3:25:1 rear axle ratio, its muscle car prowess is top-notch. The Deluxe Marti Report will also show this example left the Dearborn factory with power steering, power front disc brakes, competition suspension, and AM radio.
