1970 Porsche 911T
The 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 stands as a pivotal model in Porsche's storied history, marking a significant evolution in the 911 lineup. Introduced at the Paris Motor Show in October 1972, the Carrera RS (Rennsport) was developed to homologate the 911 for Group 4 racing, requiring the production of at least 500 units. Due to its overwhelming popularity, Porsche ultimately produced 1,580 examples.
Distinguished by its iconic "ducktail" rear spoiler, the first of its kind on a production vehicle, the Carrera RS 2.7 enhanced aerodynamic stability and reduced lift at high speeds. This feature, combined with wider rear wheel arches accommodating larger tires, improved traction and handling, setting new standards for sports car performance. The vehicle's lightweight construction, achieved through the use of thinner sheet metal, thinner glass, and minimal insulation, resulted in a curb weight as low as 2,149 lbs in the Sport variant. Under the rear engine lid resided a 2.7-litre, air-cooled, flat-six engine producing 210 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 188 lbs-ft of torque. This powerplant propelled the Carrera RS 2.7 from 0 to 60 mph in approximately 5.6 seconds, with a top speed around 150 mph. The Carrera RS 2.7's blend of performance, distinctive design, and racing pedigree has cemented its status as one of the most desirable and collectible Porsche models. Its influence is evident in subsequent 911 variants, making way for enthusiasts to construct or "update" various 911 models, a common and rapidly growing trend among Porsche aficionados.
Completed in 2006, this 1970 Porsche 911T has been updated to a more sought-after 1973 2.7 Carrera RS configuration. Retaining its original hood, fenders, and doors, it has been finished in a stealthy black with red rocker "Carrera," stripes and Carrera RS-style Fuchs wheels with matching red painted centers. Rounding out its stance is an iconic composite ducktail spoiler, flag style mirrors, and NOS Bosch H1 headlights. During this process, the cabin received the same treatment, as it has been completely updated as well. New black carpets were installed, an OEM headliner was fitted, and RS-style door panels and handles were equipped. The dash was replaced with white-faced gauges and a modern Pioneer AM/FM/CD stereo system was installed.
More than just an aesthetic update, performance was also refined. The engine has been improved to a 1975 Porsche 2.7-litre flat six-cylinder engine with dual 40 Weber carburetors and paired with a rebuilt Porsche 911 901 five-speed manual transaxle, tasteful indeed. Other key items addressed during the RS update included installing new anodized brake calipers and brake lines, a new OEM alternator belt with new shims, as well as installing a new gas tank.
Tastefully updated with the iconic Carrera RS aesthetics and 2.7-litre flat six-engine, this updated 911 offers the best of both worlds with unforgettable looks and thrilling performance that can be enjoyed and used on roadgoing rallies or just as a daily, very cool grocery-getter.
