The second generation of Camaros from 1970 to 1981 enjoyed tremendous success, but the road wasn't always smooth and the future of Camaro wasn't always a sure thing. During 1972, Camaro had to withstand several setbacks, one of which was convincing those who had a desire for high horsepower that their engines were still formidable beasts due to new regulations. Another major issue for the 1972 Camaro was an extended 174-day strike at the Norwood, Ohio facility. When the strike was over, GM had to scrap over 1,100 Camaros that had been on the assembly line when the strike was called due to safety concerns and some changes in mandatory equipment requirements. As a result of the labor actions, just 68,656 Camaros for 1972 would be produced, only 2,575 of those assembled with the Z28 package.

Those lucky enough to order and receive one of these mean machines found the exclusive LT1, "Turbo Fire 350" a 225 "net" HP, 350-cubic-inch V-8 that was available with a choice of transmissions. Exterior appointments included Twin Rally stripes applied to the massive hood and the full width rear deck spoiler. The Z28 was the only Camaro that came with 15" wheels, which were sporty Mag-style in dark pewter gray with bright chromed center hubcaps, wearing top quality F70 X 15" radial tires that would grip the road even under hard driving conditions. These cars were a bit of a status symbol and let people know what you were driving with Z28 badges placed prominently up front on the unique blacked-out grille, on both front fender sides and centered on the rear deck lid. Under the hood, the potent mill was fitted with finned aluminum valve covers partnered up with a chrome air cleaner, special flex fan, and heavy-duty items like the radiator, engine mounts and starter. Full instrumentation was essential for those demanding performance with the Z28 fitted with an ammeter, clock, and oil pressure gauges plus the all-important 7,000 RPM tachometer. The price for the Z28 option was reasonable for the time at just under $600, and a long list of other accessories could also be ordered to individualize each of these Camaro coupes.

Showing just a bit over 7,750 miles on the odometer, this beautiful example is finished in its Mojave Gold with twin white rally stripes, while the ultra-clean interior sports the light tan vinyl hi-back bucket seats featuring built in headrests. This example was a bare-bones ride with performance in mind as it is fitted the M21 close-ratio four-speed manual transmission rather than an automatic. The cleanly designed, curved instrument cluster features the speedometer and tachometer mounted side-by-side, surrounded by the four gauges which are clean and functional. Mounted in the center dash is the base push-button AM radio. Always maintained and protected with kid gloves, this sweet Z28 comes with its original dealer invoice and other important documents plus the coveted Protect-O-Plate. Under the hood, the original engine looks fresh and new with improved handling coming from power steering, the heavy-duty suspension, stiff rear stabilizer bar, and power-assisted disc brakes up front and proven drum brakes to the rear for sure-footed stopping. Riding on a set of what appear to be proper vintage Firestone F60 X 15 Wide Oval raised white letter tires, the Z28 exclusive Mag style wheels look like it is 1972 all over again. The LT1 roars to life with the turn of a key as the dual exhaust delivers a throaty roar of all-American horsepower.

This Z28 has spent many years in the hands of private collectors stored in climate-controlled environments, preserved for future generations to admire. An old saying in the collector-car world is "They are original only once," and this might be your opportunity to own an authentic Z28 Camaro that restorers can only dream of replicating.
