1987 Chevrolet El Camino SS ‘Choo Choo Edition’
The El Camino was a workhorse model for Chevrolet for several decades until 1987. There was demand for a roadster utility you could drive to church on Sunday and still haul your tools around all week. This lovely '87 El Camino SS is a fine example of the tasteful customization of the era and the quality work being done by Choo Choo Customs, founded in 1975 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, as one of the premier conversion van builders in the United States. They modified basic utilitarian vans and churned out luxurious vehicles with dazzling paint schemes and over-the-top interiors. At Chevrolet's urging, Choo Choo began offering a customized version of the El Camino SS through Chevy dealers in 1983. It is estimated that 2,500 El Caminos went through Choo Choo's shop in the five years from '83 through '87.
This 1987 Chevrolet El Camino SS Choo Choo edition starts as one of just 861 SS models built by Chevrolet in 1987. Power is derived from a 305-cubic-inch V-8 engine backed by a floor-shifted 700R4 four-speed automatic overdrive transmission. Inside, the full complement of factory power accessories, including power steering, brakes, windows, and door locks add to the cruise control and air-conditioning in the opulent cabin. Even the Choo Choo-installed custom cassette deck is in place, and the gray cloth bucket seat interior features a custom Lecarra steering wheel, with clean carpets as well as faux woodgrain trim throughout.
Outside, the black paint shows well, with very cool period-style graphics and chrome trim. The odometer reads just under 34,000 miles, which is highly believable considering the honest, original condition throughout. You'll love the authentic Cragar chrome mag wheels, aluminum bed rails, and custom rear spoiler over the covered bed. With a narrowed aerodynamic front end, designer door handle inserts, and the rare body side moldings, Choo Choo was simply delivering what we wished GM would have built. These fifth generation El Caminos, with sharp-edged styling and bold graphics from Choo Choo, are sure to standout at any cruise-in or car show you wish to attend.
