Produced between 1996 and 2004, the Porsche 996 debuted the first all-new platform for a 911 in 34 years, and much to the cries of Porschephiles, it was the first water-cooled 911 ever. At the time of its development, Porsche was facing financial difficulty and significant pressure for the 996 to be a success, and the myriad mechanical changes were necessary for the car to meet safety and emissions standards into the future. Thanks in large part to a 45 percent stiffer chassis and a 50kg weight saving over the 993, the 996 was indeed a success, and has become known for being one of the best balanced 911s of the modern era.

The styling revisions might have proved divisive a quarter of a century ago, but today it has found a much wider appreciation with enthusiasts and collectors. In fact, we're pretty sure that most of the drama over its styling has been hyped up in the intervening decades. Period magazines certainly rated the car very highly and few really seem to have shed a tear at the 993's passing - hard as that may be to believe today. After four very successful series named 911 (F), 911 (G), 964 and 993, Porsche introduced its newly developed 996 in 1997. Apart from sharing the badge and model 911 designation, the 996 series had little in common with its predecessor 993. The most notable changes to the new series were the all-new chassis platform and a newly developed water-cooled engine, which was a radically major technical change from the original concept of the 911. Another notable modification were the headlamps, quickly nicknamed "fried egg" headlamps because of their peculiar shape. The 996 remains the only 911 to date to feature these headlamps; all subsequent series went back to the more traditionally shaped units.

This well-kept 1999 Porsche 911 Carrera has an early March 1998 production date which was manufactured on the 993 production line. Early 996s such as this one have become highly collectible. Additionally, early 996s are known to be some of the lightest water-cooled 911s. As shown on the factory window sticker that accompanies the car, optional factory equipment includes lightweight Technology 408 hollow spoke wheels, rear window wiper, leather seating areas, HI-FI sound package and AM/FM radio with cassette player.

While well-maintained, the car suffered from an IMS failure. The event provided an opportunity for the car's owner to not only rebuild the car's engine, but to enhance it. To that end, the car was delivered to noted Porsche specialist shop Emegatronic in Bridgeport, Connecticut, for a comprehensive rebuilding of the engine. At Emegatronic, the cylinders were bored and nickel plated and new internals added with oversized performance pistons, creating a displacement of 3.6-litres. Elio, owner of Emegatronic, personally tuned the car with a stage one tune. Additionally, the car has been fitted with HK coilovers and an ECS wheel flush kit for a wider stance. The ride height and corner balance are set perfectly. Total weight with full fuel is 3,117 lbs. Driving this upgraded and finely tuned early 996 is a thrilling experience one will not soon forget.

Finished from the factory in crisp-looking Arctic Silver with Graphite Grey interior, who doesn't love the simple and clean silhouette of an early 996. This car is expertly crafted with a rebuilt high-performance engine and is one of the best of its kind.
