2008 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster
Mercedes-Benz proudly introduced their new SLR (Sport Leicht Rennsport) Supercar in 2005, allowing Mercedes-Benz and its then Formula 1 partner, McLaren, to highlight their collective experience in the development, construction, and production of high-performance sports cars. Just like its legendary 300SLR predecessor of 1955, they incorporated technological developments that were ahead of their time. The heart of any car is its engine, and that of the SLR McLaren is truly outstanding. Produced at Mercedes-Benz's AMG performance division, where each unit was the responsibility of one engineer who carried out the entire assembly process, it is a 5.5-litre, all-alloy, 24-valve, supercharged V-8 producing 617 horsepower, making it one of the most powerful engines to be found in a series-produced roadgoing sports car. Impressive as this peak horsepower figure is, it is the torque produced by this state-of-the-art 'blown' motor that is its most remarkable feature. The torque curve is almost flat: there are 440 lbs-ft by 1,500 rpm and well over 500 lbs-ft between 3,000 and 5,000 rpm.
The five-speed automatic transmission has been specially optimized for remarkably high torque and also offers the driver the option of choosing between different shift characteristics using the Speedshift system. Continuing the long-term technological collaboration that Mercedes-Benz and McLaren enjoyed in Formula 1, the SLR's carbon fiber composite monocoque body/chassis structure was produced in the latter's all-new facility in Woking, England. Using several patented innovations, Mercedes-Benz and McLaren brought a measure of automation to the carbon fiber manufacturing process, enabling the material's benefits of low weight, exemplary rigidity and strength, corrosion resistance and significantly higher energy absorption in the event of an impact, to be offered in the SLR. The use of composite technology was also extended to the brake rotors, which are manufactured from a fiber-reinforced ceramic material capable of withstanding extremely high temperatures and offering a level of fade resistance previously unattainable in series-produced road cars. Topping off this technological tour de force is the electronically controlled rear spoiler, which rises to an angle of 65 degrees when the driver brakes heavily, boosting the braking effect by increasing aerodynamic drag and lending the SLR outstanding stability when braking at high speeds.
Presented by Mercedes as "The Silver Arrow of Tomorrow," this 2008 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is finished in Pure Black with a heather grey soft top over a black leather interior. The odometer shows just 10,424 miles at the time of cataloging, which would track with the overall presentation of the car, showcasing the care it has received throughout its life. A force to reckon with on the streets, this SLR McLaren boasts a hand-assembled 617-horsepower 5.4-litre supercharged V-8 engine, which has the ability to conquer a 0 to 60 time in 3.4 seconds while on its way to a truly impressive top speed of 207 miles-per-hour. Derived from Formula 1 engineering, it features an AMG SPEEDSHIFT R five-speed automatic transmission, carbon-ceramic brakes, and impressive handling capabilities.
Documented on a clean and thoroughly detailed 12-page CARFAX® report, this low mileage example was serviced on multiple occasions at 14-time MLB All Star Alex Rodriguez's Mercedes-Benz dealership in Texas. Most importantly, a complete tune-up that cost a reported $26,000 was conducted by Park Place Motorcars 300 miles ago. This work consisted of replacing the spark plugs and wires, replacing the battery, flushing and replacing the brake fluid, as well as the rear differential fluid, and mounting and aligning four new tires.
An intimidating supercar that was crafted by a collaboration of two of the most respected and successful Formula 1 teams to ever grace the racetrack, combined with its low-production and remarkable performance, it is slated to never lose its dramatic flair and prominent place in the supercar history books. This example is one of the most desirable current and future cars rising in value and collectibility.
