1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Newmarket Convertible Sedan
Crafted during one of the most refined eras of luxury motoring, this 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Newmarket Convertible Sedan represents the perfect marriage of British engineering and American design sophistication. Assembled at Rolls-Royce's famed Springfield, Massachusetts facility, the American-market Phantom I offered all the mechanical excellence of its British counterpart while allowing for coachwork by the finest U.S. builders. Chief among them was Brewster & Company of Long Island City, New York, whose reputation for tasteful, understated elegance made them the preferred coachbuilder for Rolls-Royce of America. The Newmarket body style was one of Brewster's most versatile creations. With its long, flowing fenders, disappearing convertible top, and formal roofline, the Newmarket offered the stature of a closed sedan with the open-air experience of a touring car. Finished with tasteful brightwork and sweeping lines, the design remains one of Brewster's most iconic contributions to the Classic Era.
Under the long bonnet lies Rolls-Royce's legendary 7.7-litre inline-six engine, renowned for its smooth, whisper-quiet power delivery. A three-speed manual gearbox sends power to the rear wheels, delivering a graceful, gliding driving experience that Rolls-Royce owners expected and revered. Mechanically robust and impressively overbuilt, the Phantom I continues to be one of the more respected pre-war luxury chassis conceived. Inside, the cabin is a showcase of opulence, fitted with finely grained wood, and rich leather, and is tailored for elegance. Rear passengers are treated to generous legroom and peerless ride comfort. Whether used for formal occasions or leisurely weekend drives, this Newmarket offers an unmatched level of prestige for its passengers.
Offered from an impressive Texas-based collection, this Springfield, Massachusetts-built Rolls-Royce with elegant coachwork by Brewster has been maintained to a high standard. It is draped in charming blue with dark blue fenders and elevated by its proper beige top and matching rear-mounted luggage trunk cover. Leading the charge is the stately Rolls-Royce grille that is topped with a "Spirit of Ecstasy" mascot. Other items include dual enclosed side-mounted spares, a chrome landaulet bar, and matching side lights mounted on the front fenders.
Today, Springfield-built Rolls-Royces with Brewster coachwork are highly coveted by collectors and Classic Car Club of America (CCCA) members alike. Their enduring beauty, engineering integrity, and roadworthiness make them ideal candidates for concours events, long-distance tours, museum preservation, or future Rolls-Royce Owners' Club events. This Rolls stands as a gleaming example to an era when automobiles were not just transportation, but works of art tailored for the elite.
