1956 Continental Mk II ‘Remarkable’ Custom
Known as one of the best when it comes to applying his visions and skills to custom-built cars, Rick Dore has crafted some of the most respected one-off customs in the world and has effortlessly built a worldwide reputation. Often blending early to mid-20th century American car designs with radical modern coachbuilding, Rick uses his old-world skills to their fullest abilities to create rolling works of art. Some of Rick's world-renowned creations include Shangri-La, Black Pearl, and Aquarius, which the latter were both custom built for James Hetfield of Metallica, and El Sueno. With a clientele list as exclusive as his cars, Rick Dore's creations are in high demand.
Looking to put his custom twist on an already rare American automobile, Rick chose a 1956 Continental Mark II. Just 2,550 1956 Continental Mark IIs were built in-period, so taking on the project to radically customize one is a daring task. But, like every Rick Dore custom, the outcome is truly special and show-stopping in every sense. Radically customized, the body panels were smoothly sculpted and shaved, and the rear fenders were arched to help achieve the brilliantly smooth body lines. The headlights were frenched, a custom grille was installed, and of course the top was precisely cut, a Rick Dore signature. To accommodate the new body lines and contours, the windshield was sent to Norway to be custom made by Timo Tanskanan. Almost every single body contour and line were addressed to create its special and one-of-a-kind appearance.
The transcending paint scheme was applied by one of the best in the business, Darryl Hollenbeck, and features PPG Oriental Blue pearl with Cobalt Blue toner and white pearl highlights over the base color. A mesmerizing appearance, it is further elevated by concours-level chrome that can be found in the door jambs and Colorado custom billet wheels wrapped in Coker radial whitewall tires.
Under the hood lies a completely chromed-out, show-stopping big-block Chevrolet V-8 engine that is paired with a 400-turbo automatic transmission. Built on a digital air ride system, its stance can be easily lowered. Ready to be taken to shows, this ultra custom can be driven and enjoyed if the next owner wishes to do so.
Inside the cabin, is a complete custom interior done by famed upholsterer Bob Devine of San Francisco, California. A one-of-a-kind look, it features white pearl seats with a black and blue suede console and molded headliner. Retaining its power windows, other finishing touches include a custom dash with digital gauges.
Once finished, this radical custom made its public debut at the 2000 Oakland Roadster show at the Oakland Colosseum where it caused a stir for its sensational styling. Immediately after, it would grace the cover and be featured in multiple hot rod magazines. Custom built for a private client, "Remarkable" has been displayed in a private museum since its show debut and most recently was serviced by Rick Dore himself with specific attention to the interior and air-ride system. It stands ready be enjoyed by its next owner.
A truly one-of-a-kind custom by one of the best in the world, this 1956 Continental Mark II, best known around the globe as "Remarkable," will surely continue to garner nonstop attention, stop onlookers in their tracks, and further dazzle and amaze at future shows, in collections or within a museum.
