1968 Iso Grifo GL Series I
The Iso Grifo GL Series I was born from a collaboration between two of Italy's most celebrated automotive minds: Renzo Rivolta, founder of Iso, and engineer Giotto Bizzarrini, known for his work on the Ferrari 250 GTO. Seeking to create a world-class GT that could rival Ferrari and Maserati, Iso debuted the Grifo in 1965. While the car featured dramatic Italian styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Bertone, it was powered by American V-8 muscle-initially Chevrolet's small-block 327-delivering power, reliability, and ease of serviceability, and later the highly desirable 427 variant.
The Grifo Series I remained in production through 1970 and was offered in several configurations, with just 330 examples produced. The "GL" stood for Gran Lusso, or Grand Luxury, reflecting its status as a refined, high-speed cruiser. The body design was low-slung, aggressive, and elegantly proportioned, with a long hood and short rear deck that emphasized its performance capabilities.
This example is a 1968 Iso Grifo GL Series I, equipped with a rare and desirable Pavesi sunroof. Milan-based Carrozzeria Pavesi was known for high-quality custom coachwork, and their steel sunroof conversions were executed with a factory-like level of finish. Very few Grifos received this treatment, making this car especially collectable.
This Iso's storied history begins when it was delivered new to Dutch real estate mogul Maurits Caransa, who at the time was said to be one of the wealthiest men in the Netherlands. Delivered new in white over black with a 327-cid V-8 engine, it was most notably one of just six Iso Grifos delivered with an original Pavesi sunroof, which is essentially a "T-Top" configuration as it has dual removable panels. Also noted at its delivery, this Iso was equipped with factory air-conditioning, an ideal option for touring travel.
Acquired by another Netherlands resident, he would entrust Iso Grifo expert Roberto and Federico Negri to perform a comprehensive restoration that totaled over 200,000 euros in 2005. Finished in a brilliant bright Giallo, all the body panels and components were properly addressed. Most notably during the restoration by the marque specialists, this Iso was uprated with a period-correct 427-cubic-inch 7-litri V-8 engine and new automatic transmission. At this same time, ventilated disc brakes and power steering were rightfully equipped, further elevating its already impressive Gran Lusso driving experience.
Under previous ownership for five years, this Iso was bestowed with a new butterscotch leather interior and took part in the 2016 Copperstate 1000, reportedly performing effortlessly throughout the tour route. It was acquired by the current noted collector in 2020 and has since been maintained and serviced to a high standard.
By blending the best of American and Italian engineering, the Grifo offered thrilling performance with European refinement. With its bespoke features, limited production, and timeless design, this 1968 Iso Grifo GL with its Pavesi sunroof and factory air-conditioning stands as a rare and alluring piece of grand touring history; it is ideal for collectors who appreciate both exclusivity and pedigree.
