At a time when horsepower was king and automakers pushed the limits of street-legal performance, the 1970 Chevelle SS 454 LS6 stood at the top. Introduced as part of the second-generation Chevelle lineup, the 1970 model year brought refreshed styling with a more aggressive front end and bulging fenders. Chevrolet offered several trim levels and engine choices for the 1970 Chevelle, but the SS (Super Sport) package was where performance enthusiasts turned their attention. Buyers could opt for the SS 396 with a 350- or 375-horsepower V-8 or step up to the newly introduced SS 454. The base 454 was the LS5, which delivered a formidable 360 horsepower. But the ultimate weapon was the LS6, a 454-cubic-inch V-8 engine officially rated at 450 horsepower and 500 foot-pounds of torque; though many believe it actually produced closer to 500 horsepower in real-world conditions.

The LS6 featured a forged steel crankshaft, solid lifter camshaft, high-compression pistons, an aluminum intake manifold, and a Holley 800 CFM four-barrel carburetor. Backed by either a heavy-duty Muncie four-speed manual or a three-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 automatic transmission and often paired with a 12-bolt Positraction rear end, the LS6 Chevelle could sprint from 0 to 60 mph in well under 6 seconds-staggering for a full-size street car in 1970.

Limited buyers opted to check the box at the dealership for the high horsepower, resulting in fewer LS6-equipped Chevelles produced, making them highly coveted today. The LS6 wasn't just the most powerful Chevelle ever built, it was the most powerful engine Chevrolet had installed in a production car at the time. As the muscle car era neared its end, the 1970 Chevelle SS LS6 stood as a defiant, fire-breathing final word.

A true king of the pavement, this numbers-matching 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS LS6 is regarded as one of the most sought-after Chevrolet muscle cars ever created. The recipient of a complete nut-and-bolt restoration completed in Saint Louis, Missouri, this Chevelle is presented in Code 75 Cranberry Red with black stripes over a red upholstered cabin. Recently inspected and authenticated by Chevelle expert Rick Nelson of Muscle Car Restoration Design Inc., this example is a real-deal factory SS LS6 454-cubic-inch 450-horsepower V-8 example. Nicely equipped, this LS6 retains its M22 "Rock Crusher" four-speed manual transmission, power steering, power brakes, power windows, and a radio. Since its comprehensive restoration, it has been cosmetically and mechanically freshened by O'Daniel Automotive Restoration and Ultra Motorsports LLC of Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Accompanied by a large binder of invoice records, documented by Rick Nelson, and listed in the LS6 454 Registry, this authentic numbers-matching, four-speed, LS6 Chevelle has been superbly maintained since its restoration both aesthetically and mechanically and remains ready for spirited driving or showing by its next caretaker. A true blue-chip muscle car.
