The 1962 Porsche 356 B 1600 Super Twin Grille Roadster is among the rarest and most desirable open-top variants of the 356 series, representing the final expression of Porsche's classic lightweight sports car design before the arrival of the 911. Just 248 examples of the Twin Grille Roadster were built for the 1962 model year, all bodied by D'Ieteren Freres of Brussels, Porsche's final contracted coachbuilder for open cars.

Part of the 356 B T6 generation introduced in late 1961, this model featured several important updates over its predecessors, including a larger front trunk opening, improved brakes, and a redesigned dashboard. More subtly, the rear bodywork was modified to accommodate a unique twin-louvered engine lid, allowing for enhanced airflow to the rear-mounted, air-cooled flat-four engine, a detail exclusive to these final-year Roadsters and a key hallmark of the model's rarity.

At the heart of the 1600 Super Twin Grille Roadster is a 1.6-litre engine, designated "Super" in Porsche's hierarchy. The 1600 Super delivered a perfect blend of spirited performance, mechanical simplicity, and long-legged touring ability. In a lightweight open-body configuration, the car offered a pure and direct driving experience that encapsulated the very essence of Porsche engineering.

The D'Ieteren-bodied examples are known for their excellent build quality, refined details, and slightly more upright windshields, giving them a distinctive profile. While the Roadster offered a bit less creature comfort than the Cabriolet, it rewarded drivers with a raw, connected feel, more akin to the original Speedster, but with improved practicality and chassis rigidity. As one of the last true open 356s before the cabriolet took over, these Roadsters blend minimalist styling, impressive performance, and coach-built rarity. With just 248 built, the D'Ieteren-bodied Twin Grille Roadster is not only rare, but also a highly refined example of the 356 lineage, making it one of the most collectable and celebrated open-air Porsches ever produced.

Completed in November 1961, this U.S.-specification rare twin grille roadster was delivered to its original owner in Crown Point, Indiana. One of the earliest known examples, 89604 is just the fourth Twin Grille Roadster of the 248 examples to be produced. The color combination is highly desriable, finished in its correct-as-delivered new Bali Blue paint, it gleams with authenticity, matched by richly finished brown leather upholstery and a tan convertible top and carpeting. Its stylish open-air appearance is complete with Tecnomagnesio wheels wrapped in Michelin tires. A set of original style chrome wheels and tires accompany the car. Under the rear deck lid lies a high-performance, correct air-cooled type 616/2 T2 1600 Super flat-four engine that is paired with a four-speed transaxle to create the unforgettable classic Porsche experience that enthusiasts all around the world fully appreciate and thoroughly enjoy.

Other items that the next caretaker will be given include a copy of the Porsche's Kardex, a Porsche Production Specification Certificate, a complete tool kit, spare tire assembly, matching boot cover, and a full cab tonneau cover.

The 1962 Twin Grille Roadster is a true swan song of the handcrafted 356 era, an open-top sports car that bridges the gap between Porsche's early post-war roots and its future as a global performance brand. With its rarity, coach-built pedigree, and iconic twin grille design, the 356 B 1600 Super Roadster stands today as a coveted collector's gem and a timeless expression of Porsche's commitment to design purity and driving pleasure.
